Undergraduate Research

Start with curiosity. Build research experience over time.

Undergraduate research is one way to learn what materials research looks like in real life. CAMM connects students with mentors, projects, research discussions, presentation opportunities, and a larger community working in advanced materials and manufacturing.

You do not need to know everything before getting started. This page is meant to help you understand what undergraduate research can look like and where to go next.

Skills

Confidence building

REU participants reported growth in areas such as collaboration, public speaking, and social confidence.

It is okay to start without knowing exactly where you fit.

Many students begin with simple questions: What topics sound interesting? Do I like hands-on lab work, coding, data analysis, outreach, communication, or a mix? What kind of mentor or research environment would help me learn?

Ask about the work

  • What does an undergraduate researcher do in this group?
  • What skills would I learn?
  • What training is provided?

Ask about support

  • Will I work with a graduate student or postdoctoral mentor?
  • How much time is expected each week?
  • How often would I meet with the research team?

Ask about next steps

  • Could this lead to a poster or presentation?
  • Could this help me prepare for an REU?
  • What should I read or do before starting?

The REU page explains the SMaRT summer research pathway.

A Research Experience for Undergraduates is a structured way to spend focused time on a real research project with mentors. CAMM’s REU pathway is connected to the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute’s SMaRT Internship Program and includes research projects, mentoring, professional development, presentations, and CAMM community activities.
